Updating QuickBooks helps you protect your data and optimize your financial management. However, sometimes, you may be unable to get updates due to a poor internet connection, running multiple background processes, or not providing the necessary user permissions. 

Whether you have Windows or Mac, we will discuss the best way to update QuickBooks Desktop for both systems. 

Updating QuickBooks Desktop to the Latest Version

When an update is available, QB downloads and installs it by itself, but you can also manually install the updates. We will tell you how to do it.

For Windows Computers:

Step 1: Check for the Latest Release

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop.

  • Press F2 (or Ctrl+1).

  • Open the Product Information window.

  • Check your current version and release.

  • Verify if you have the latest release for your version:

  • QuickBooks 2024 R8_31

  • QuickBooks 2023 R13_26

  • QuickBooks 2022 R15_38

Step 2: Update Within QuickBooks

  • Close your company files and QuickBooks.

  • Open the Windows Start menu.

  • Search for QuickBooks Desktop.

  • Right-click the icon.

  • Select Run as administrator.

  • Access the No Company Open screen.

  • Go to the Help menu.

  • Select Update QuickBooks Desktop.

  • Go to the Options tab.

  • Select Mark All.

  • Then click Save.

  • Go to the Update Now tab.

  • Check the Reset Update box.

  • Click Get Updates.

  • Once done, close and reopen QuickBooks Desktop

  • Select Yes to install the updates.

  • After installation, restart your computer.

  • Also, download the latest payroll tax.

Note: Properly configure your update settings if the No option in QuickBooks Automatic Update is disabled. 

Step 3: End Task For Specific  Processes

If the release number doesn’t change, try this method.

  • Close QuickBooks.

  • Right-click on the taskbar.

  • Choose Task Manager.

  • In the Details tab, find and select the following background processes, then click End Task for each:

    • QBW32.exe or QBW.exe

    • QBCFMonitorService.exe

    • qbupdate.exe

    • QBDBMgr.exe or QBDBMgrN.exe

    • QBMapi32.exe

  • Right-click on the QuickBooks shortcut.

  • Choose Run as administrator.

  • Run the update again.

For Mac Computers:

Step 1: Check for the Latest Release

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

  • Press Command + 1.

  • Access the Product Information window.

  • Check your current version & release.

  • Refer to the release notes to see if you have the latest version:

  • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2024 R4

  • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2023 R7

  • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2022 R12

Step 2: Update Manually

  • Go to the QuickBooks menu.

  • Select Check for QuickBooks Updates.

  • Click Install and Relaunch.

  • Note: To ensure updates get installed automatically in the future, select Automatically download and install updates in the future.
